How did your career at UMPT begin?
After successfully passing numerous interviews in 2010, I was offered a position as Head of the Treasury Department in the Finance Division. Initially, the company was located in the former Uzavtosanoat building, but within a few months, the team moved to the plant construction site in the Zangiata district of Tashkent region.
Tell us about your education and work experience abroad. What positive practices gained during that time do you apply at the plant?
I earned my education in the United States at Arkansas State University, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Finance (BA) and a Master of Business Administration (MBA). I worked in various positions in the banking sector for eight years before returning to Uzbekistan.
One of the key practices I adopted while working abroad is maintaining a positive attitude toward employees. By showing empathy, respect, and leading by example, a leader brings the team together and rewards them when they achieve their goals.
Has the company faced difficult times? If so, what was the most challenging period in your view?
Of course, like all enterprises, we’ve had tough periods. In 2016, we experienced a sharp decline in production volumes and a drop in export market sales. In the first half of that year, there was almost no cash inflow, yet we had large stocks of raw materials and components from suppliers, expecting high production volumes. Additionally, UMPT had significant loan obligations to banks.
Suppliers began to complain about delayed payments and sent formal notices, which led banks to freeze the company's accounts. Cash inflows were only enough to cover employee salaries and utility bills. It was a very challenging time. However, after long negotiations with suppliers, we reached agreements to postpone payments and restructured our debts with the banks. By the end of the year, the situation stabilized, and all debts were repaid the following year.
How do you see the future of our company over the next 5 years?
Over the past 4 years, we have been working on the “CSS Prime” project, which is planned to be completed in 2024. This project involves localizing the new 1.2L and 1.2L Turbo engine types for Tracker and Onix models produced by UzAuto Motors in Asaka.
As part of this project, we plan to localize the machining of the cylinder head and block, the crankshaft machining, and casting of the cylinder block.
I believe the engine under the “CSS Prime” project will be the last traditional internal combustion engine to be localized at our plant, as the global trend is gradually shifting toward electric vehicles. We will monitor future projects of UzAuto Motors and explore the possibility of localizing relevant components.
